STANTREL SWEEP

WORCESTER, MA --- For the first time this season the Tornadoes notched a series sweep and what better time to do it than the start of the second half. Rick Asadoorian (2-0) blew his second save of the series but was picked up by his teammates in the bottom of the ninth for the 5-4 win.

Mid-season acquisition right fielder Stantrel Smith has raked since joining the Tornadoes and Wednesday night was no different. After lighting the fire with his grand slam that propelled his team to a win on Monday, Smith’s walk-off chop single up the middle got the Tornadoes jumping Wednesday. Smith’s twenty three runs driven in rank fourth on the team and he has only played in twenty games. Danny Santiesteban’s two-run jolt, third in two games, propelled him to second on the team in HR.

In his second start Justin Knoff turned in a gritty seven inning performance scattering eight hits and surrendering only a pair of runs in the no decision. Former Tornado lefty Ryan Lobban’s six innings of three run ball also left him without a win or loss. After an inning a piece for set up men Edward Rodriguez, NJ, and Albert Ayala it was left up to the firemen. Romas Hicks (0-1) put forth a scoreless eighth but loaded the bases in the ninth and set things up for Stantrel.

Offensively for the dogs Jake Butler launched his ninth round tripper of the season, third against the Tornadoes, and Kevin Clark added another two run shot in the ninth that proved to be ultimately futile.

The contest Wednesday night began after a half hour rain delay and started with no power in the park. Luckily the lights kicked on just in time to play some night baseball.

Thursday night Worcester and it’s three game win streak head to Pittsfield to lock horns with the Colonials. Chris Farley (5-4) will fire for skipper Gedman at 7:05pm with coverage beginning at 7pm on WCRN. Thursday night the Shaw’s Booster Club will head out west as well.
