WORCESTER, MA --- After a frustrating 4th of July four gamer up in Canada it seems that home is where Worcester's heart is. The Tornadoes slugged five HR's, one off of the league record for long balls in a game, and John Kelly (4-2) threw a beauty en route to a 9-1 victory.
Kelly went six innings and struck out seven to jump back into second in the league strikeout race with forty seven overall in his win. Shawn Gilblair and Baron Short followed with three innings of one run ball combining for just four Brockton hits. Wayne Lundgren (5-2) dropped his second decision of the season giving up the most runs, five, over his shortest total innings pitched, five, since June 2nd.
The theme tonight however was the home run. Omar Pena, Danny Santiesteban, Nick Salotti, Ryan Crespi, and Stantrel Smith all went yard for the black and orange. Only two of the home team's RBI's was not by way of the round tripper. Smith's jack was his second of the season (his only hit on the evening) and it secured his hitting streak that now stands at nine games. He is slugging a league .833 with OPS of 1.269.
Tomorrow night the Tornadoes will try to climb out of the basement with their second win in a row against the 2nd place Rox. Matt Giusti (2-5) will toss for the Tornadoes against Mike Smith (3-3). Giusti's last home start was a complete game. Game time is at 7:05pm with fireworks immediately following the contest. |
