WORCESTER, MA --- Two of the newest Tornadoes outfielders did their best to put on some late innings theatrics against the Pittsfield Colonials Wednesday night but Kyle Zaleski's (3-1) start held up. The right hander earned his third win of the season 7-5 with six innings of one run baseball.
Jon Hollis (1-2) had been cruising in his second start turning back potential runs at every pass until the sixth inning when the Colonials scored a single run to tie the score using two stolen bases by Danny Bomback and a sacrifice fly by Rafael Cabreja. The visitors would mash in their half of the seventh as well to the tune of six runs against Hollis, Shawn Gilblair, and Albert Ayala. Daniel Barbero performed his best Stantrel Smith impression in his debut this evening with a pair of doubles and two RBI's. Cabreja and Nandin both picked up a pair of RBI's in the seventh on a double and single respectively.
Worcester began it's ill-fated comeback in the bottom of the eighth with three runs, all on on homers, one a piece from Ryan Crespi and Mark Minicozzi. Stantrel Smith added his first Tornadoes bomb in the ninth to bring the black and orange to within two. Smith also contributed a triple tonight; all his hits have been for extra bases, he's 5-8 in two contests.
With the tying runners in scoring position and two outs Reymond Cruz notched his first save in his first appearance for Pittfield. Crespi lined out the right fielder who was drawn in shallow to potentially throw out the tying run on a single.
Tomorrow Worcester will try to get back to it's winning ways with Zach Zuercher (0-0) getting his second appearance and first start with Worcester since the 2009 CanAm Championship. Opposing him will be Miguel Flores (2-3). Game time is at 7:05 with WCRN coverage beginning at 7pm. |
